The prince showed early artistic promise which would later result in a life-long commitment to the arts, both as artist and collector. After his death Waldemarsudde and his collections were bequeathed to the Swedish state. The art collections include some 3,200 works by the prince himself, and some 3,500 works by almost 450 (primarily Swedish) artists.
