Drawing on extensive archival research and compelling life-history interviews, Nursing and Empire examines the lives of Indian nurses, which have unfolded against a complex backdrop of Anglo-American capitalist imperialism and the emergence of a postcolonial Indian nation-state still tied to this global system. The book begins with the movement of white, U.S.-based single female medical missionaries to India and proceeds through the remaking of the colonial medical map through race-based segregation in the U.S. and the  open door imperialism of the Rockefeller Foundation in India. It ends with the Cold War emigration of Indian nurses as one outcome of the critical role played by U.S. medical interests in a colonial  civilizing mission. Complicating the long-held view of Indian women as passive participants in the movement of skilled labor in this period, Reddy demonstrates how these "women in the lead" pursued new opportunities afforded by their mobility. At the same time, Indian nurses also confronted stigmas based on the nature of "women s work", religious and caste differences within the migrant community, and the racial and gender hierarchies of the U.S. Spanning two centuries and multiple geographic spaces, Nursing and Empire sheds light on histories of capitalist expansion and marginalized women s histories of resistance and labor migration. This book will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of gender studies, labor history and U.S.- India relations.

The Sun Never Sets collects the work of a generation of scholars who are enacting a shift in the orientation of the field of South Asian American studies. By focusing upon the lives, work, and activism of specific, often unacknowledged, migrant populations, the contributors present a more comprehensive vision of the South Asian presence in the United States. Tracking the changes in global power that have influenced the paths and experiences of migrants, from expatriate Indian maritime workers at the turn of the century, to Indian nurses during the Cold War, to post-9/11 detainees and deportees caught in the crossfire of the "War on Terror," these essays reveal how the South Asian diaspora has been shaped by the contours of U.S. imperialism. Driven by a shared sense of responsibility among the contributing scholars to alter the profile of South Asian migrants in the American public imagination, they address the key issues that impact these migrants in the U.S., on the subcontinent, and in circuits of the transnational economy. Taken together, these essays provide tools with which to understand the contemporary political and economic conjuncture and the place of South Asian migrants within it.

The Sun Never Sets presents the work of a generation of scholars who are shifting the orientation of South Asian American studies. In its early years, the field centered on literary and cultural analyses and focused predominantly on the immigrant professionals who arrived in the United States after changes to immigration laws in the 1960s. Here, the contributors focus on the political economy and long history of South Asian migrations to the U.S.- and upon the lives, work, and activism of often unacknowledged migrant populations-in ways that not only challenge preconceptions about the South Asian presence in the United States, but illuminate continuities between British Imperialism and U.S.-led globalization. These essays track changes in global power that have influenced the paths and experiences of migrants from the Indian farmers, seamen and radicals who sought work and refuge in the U.S. in the 1910s to Indian nurses sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation during the Cold War to the post-9/11 detainees and deportees caught in the crossfire of the War on Terror . The work collected here reveals a South Asian diaspora that has long been entangled with the United States and its imperial ambitions and one that renders those imperial ambitions visible. It will appeal to anyone with interest in the historic relationship between South Asia and the United States, in the intertwined processes of imperialism and global migrations, and in the continuing struggles of South Asian migrants who have crossed oceans to pursue work and build new lives in the U.S.
