On sait peu de choses sur Achille-Jules Dalsème, sinon que c était un homme qui avait bien des cordes à son arc : publicitai…re de métier, il entra en littérature au début des années 1880 avec une série d ouvrages historiques tout à fait sérieux et analytiques sur la guerre de 1870, le Siège de Paris et la Commune. Puis cette tâche accomplie, il se fit auteur de romans très positifs pour la jeunesse dont « Le Mystère de Courvaillan » demeure l oeuvre à la fois la plus célèbre et la plus emblêmatique, et qui eût l honneur d être publiée dans la célèbre Bibliothèque du Petit Français . On ne saurait mieux résumer « Le Mystère de Courvaillan » qu en disant qu il s agit d un livre jailli de l imagination d un publicitaire, et qui représente les prémisses de ce qu allait devenir la publicité au XXème siècle. L intrigue en elle-même n a rien de rare : une chronique provinciale dans une famille bourgeoise éclatée, suite à la ruine de leur village natal, et qu un bienfaisant et richissime oncle d Amérique va ramener sur la terre de leurs ancêtres en y implantant une nouvelle industrie qui fera renaître Courvaillan. Cette chronique pourrait être d une grande banalité, et donc digne des romans de la Bibliothèque Rose écrits à la chaîne par des vieilles filles à la pédagogie puissamment chrétienne, si Achille-Jules Dalsème n en faisait une sorte de spot publicitaire avant l heure. Tout ici déborde de ce positivisme fadasse, mercantile et décérébré que l on subit encore quotidiennement à la télévision, à la radio ou sur Internet. La famille des Méhot est une famille idéale, à l image de tous ceux qui gravitent autour d elle : les hommes y sont francs et travailleurs, les femmes sont mondaines, volontiers frivoles mais sages, et les enfants sont d adorables galopins qui font des farces gentilles et des bourdes hilarantes. Tout va toujours très bien, personne ne se dispute, personne ne se jalouse, tout le monde s adore sans y penser, et il y a même un domestique mollasson et neurasthénique dont on peut collectivement se payer la tête sans qu il s en offense, car les Méhot sont tous riches, puissants, on les adore quoi qu ils fassent, car ils n ont pas de problème ou si peu. Une seule ombre à leur tableau : ce village du Vaucluse qu ils ont tous laissé derrière eux pour faire fortune ailleurs, principalement à Paris. Courvaillan fut longtemps un village prospère grâce à ses usines de colorants naturels, tirés de la très riche végétation de la région. Mais un jour, les progrès de la technologie firent que l on découvrit un colorant synthétique qui coûtait bien moins cher, et qui, lentement mais sûrement, amena les usines de Courvaillan à mettre la clef sous la porte, faute de pouvoir s adapter. Et comme les environs n offraient aucun autre débouché d emploi, tous les habitants du village finirent par abandonner leurs maisons, et partirent refaire leur vie ailleurs. Although passed by censor board, the films graphic surgical scenes caused controversy, and it was originally shown in the United States in a heavily edited version titled "The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus."
