Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. IS ALL WELL ON THE POTOMAC?, Colonel Ira L. Reeves, hardcover, first edition, stated first printing, March 1936. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in very good condition with no dogears, marks, or tears. The pages are age-toned. There is no bookplate or signature of a previous owner. This is not a library book or remainder. There are a few marks on the final endpapers. The blue boards are in good condition (faded and bumped spine, bumped corners, shelf wear). 8 x 5 ¼, 173 pages, 12 ounces. XX The book was published with the intention of drawing voters away from Franklin D. Roosevelt's campaign for a second term. [From the foreword] A COMMON SENSE TALK WITH COMMON SENSE PEOPLE. This volume, IS ALL WELL ON THE POTOMAC?, aspires to become a people's book. It ventures to serve many kinds of citizens of different political faiths. It attempts a non-political, non-partisan presentation of present day national issues. It reveals a number of truths about some of the nameless, and seemingly meaningless, theories and schemes of our Government, which do not appear to be getting us anywhere except into an appalling National Public debt which is increasing at the rate of approximately $9,000 a minute. What is there to support the wisdom of this unprecedented wasteful expenditure, which must inevitably lead to confiscation of private property? Nothing except bulletins from Government paid publicity agents representing numerous alphabetical noodle soup bureaus, extolling the merits of this wasteful orgy; and speeches by partisan politicians who are the direct and immediate beneficiaries of this bounty of the taxpayers' money. It is said that these expenditures to date have amounted to $80.00 for every man, woman, child and infant in the United States. Who got it? Did your family get your $80.00 per head? Did your neighbor and his family get their $80.00 per head? Emphatically, No! Then who got it? XX [New York Times Oct. 26, 1939 obituary for Col. Reeves] Colonel Ira L. Reeves, educator, author, engineer, veteran of four wars and militant anti-prohibitionist, died on Monday in Eldon, Mo., at the age of 67. Colonel Reeves took part in every military campaign of the United States from the Bannock Indian War in 1891 to the World War. He was wounded in the Philippine campaign and cited for "bravery and unexcelled energy," and was wounded in the World War on Nov. 11, 1918, the day the armistice was signed. The Colonel was commandant and Professor of Military Science at Purdue University, Miami Military Institute and the University of Vermont. In 1915, he became president of Norwich University. Later he was president of the A. E. F. University in France. After serving three years as Prohibition Administrator of New Jersey, Colonel Reeves resigned and became manager in Chicago of The Crusaders, an anti-prohibition organization. He also headed an engineering company.
