[A remarkable album documents an Oregon Jehovah's Witness family's trek across the country to the 1950 Theocracy's Increase Assembly with 123,000 participants, the 1953 New World Assembly in New York, which featured more than 165,000 participants, with over 126,000 in Yankee Stadium, while another 50,000 listened to speeches, and participated in rallies at the trailer camp at New Market, New Jersey; as well as the Glad Nation's Theocratic Assembly in Cleveland, OH in 1946 which was the first of the JW Assemblies after World War II and featured over 80,000 participants. The Woods have included photos of the family stops at Hoover Dam, in Yellowstone Park, Pike's Peak, Crater Lake, Sutro Baths in San Francisco, together with many images of JW Kingdom Halls in various places across America, many different gas stations, and even an overturned semi on the highway].

Oblong folio. 15.25 x 11.25 in. [88 pp (unpaginated)], on thick black paper, with 358 original photos tipped-in, sized from 2 x 3 in. up to 8 x 10 in., a few with pencil captions in margin above photos, a few with annotations on verso of photos, a few large ones with captions within the negative, 2 original postcards from Wally…& Norman addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Reginald Fred Woods for the Paris and Wembley Stadium, London Assemblies in 1951. Contemporary embossed burgundy-coloured boards, post-binder, sewn at gutter margin with black silk braid, gilt lettering stamped on front cover (some edgewear, rubbing, a couple loose photos, loose postcards, occasional minor tears, a few photos removed, occasional tidemark to upper edge of a few photos), still a VG- exemplar. This fascinating photo album provides excellent visual documentation of the growth of the Jehovah's Witnesses Churches following World War II, and the gigantic international conventions sponsored by the Watch Tower Society in the 1940s and 1950s. The first of the New World Assemblies was held in Cleveland in the summer of 1946, with over 80,000 JW's in attendance, and proved so successful it inspired the three spectacular New York City conventions at Yankee Stadium in 1950, 1953, and 1958. These photos show the throngs of people in the stands, the synchronized celebrations on the baseball diamonds, people camping out in trailers, stopping at Kingdom Halls on the way to the conventions, vendors set up in tents, The Watchtower building in Brooklyn, NY, as well as a phenomenal image of a lighted Watchtower advertising sign strapped to the top of a car, with speakers attached, the vast trailer city in New Market, NJ stretching for miles, and more. The New York 1950 Theocracy's Increase Assembly saw the first presentation of the JW New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures, their own version of the New Testament, as well as Defending and Legally Establishing the Good News by Hayden Covington helping their door-to-door preachers resist police harassment. In addition, there are many photos showing Jehovah's Witness meetings, proselytizers wearing placards marching in front of Kingdom Halls, Businesses, Restaurants in such places as Oxnard, CA, Vancouver, WA, and more. The 1958 New York JW convention would be the last large international convention held. Although quite orderly, and peaceful, the local businesses were overworked, and the Jehovah's Witnesses were notoriously poor customers and tippers, and the vast throngs of visitors overwhelmed the facilities and public spaces in and around New York. This album also features the family stops at Hoover Dam, visiting Yellowstone Park with pictures of the geysers, and the black bears, a trip to Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls, and even a series of photos at the end showing logging and building of a family cabin on the Oregon coast.
