Cette histoire du règne de François II est généralement attribuée au protestant Louis Régnier de La Planche, secrétaire de François de Montmorency, même si cette attribution a parfois été contestée. Toujours est-il que c'est l'oeuvre 'd'un huguenot puritain et passionné, peu favorable à François Ier (.) et Henri II, très hostile aux Guise, très dévoué aux Montmorency, dont il épouse les rancunes.
