Deze consensus vormt de basis van dit werk over de sociale constructie van identiteiten in de Nationale Jeugddienst van Zimbabwe (NYSZ). Andere aspecten van identiteit - de veelheid ervan en het onderhandelbare karakter - worden gebruikt als belangrijkste referentiepunten in het onderzoek naar identiteitsconstructie in de NYSZ. Deze studie onderzoekt hoe sociale identiteit wordt geconstrueerd in de NYSZ, door wie en voor wat ze wordt geconstrueerd, en, belangrijk, met welk succes de NYSZ de identiteiten creëert, en hoe haar succes kan worden verklaard. In deze studie wordt beweerd dat de NYSZ geen gewone NYS is. Het is vrij uitzonderlijk in termen van zijn structuur, doelstellingen en werking. Wat de sociologische theorieën van de NYS betreft, stel ik voor om aan de drie door Sherraden en Eberly voorgestelde perspectieven een vierde toe te voegen: de constructie van de sociale en politieke identiteit.
