Includes 2 indices. 147 pp. A differenza di altri storici latini, come Cesare e Tacito, le cui indagini etnografiche sono state a lungo apprezzate e dibattute, Sallustio non gode di buona fama come etnografo. Questo studio si propone invece di dimostrare che l'autore disponeva di una buona conoscenza dell'etnografia ellenistica, e che soprattutto la sua elaborazione concettuale dei dati etnografici è tutt'altro che trascurabile, ma ci permette di ricostruire meglio di altri autori alcuni tratti fondamentali della mentalità romana nei confronti degli altri popoli. Il saggio contiene un'introduzione generale dedicata all'etnografia antica, con i suoi modelli letterari (l'etnografia si colloca in decisa contiguità con il genere storiografico), e i sistemi culturali elaborati dai medici e dai filosofi greci, divenuti ormai patrimonio comune nella Roma del I sec. a.C. Il determinismo ambientale e la tipologia delle varie forme culturali, con la relativa teoria del progresso dalla barbarie alla civiltà, sono infatti gli strumenti di pensiero più comunemente impiegati da Sallustio, assieme ad un diftuso ricorso all'etimologia e alla mitologia, che tendono ad identificare i vari popoli per mezzo degli antenati mitici e della motivazione linguistica dei nomi etnici. Vengono qui analizzati in dettaglio il grande excursus sull'Africa nel Bellum Iugurthinum e i frammenti d'interesse etnografico nelle Historiae. Unlike other Latin historians, such as Caesar and Tacitus, whose ethnographic investigations have long been appreciated and debated, Sallust does not enjoy a good reputation as an ethnographer. This study instead aims to demonstrate that the author possessed a good knowledge of Hellenistic ethnography, and, above all, that his conceptual elaboration of ethnographic data is far from negligible. It allows us to reconstruct, better than other authors, some fundamental traits of the Roman mentality toward other peoples. The essay contains a general introduction dedicated to ancient ethnography, with its literary models (ethnography is in marked proximity to the historiographical genre), and the cultural systems developed by Greek physicians and philosophers, which had by then become common heritage in Rome in the first century BCE. Environmental determinism and the typology of various cultural forms, with the related theory of progress from barbarism to civilization, are in fact the most commonly employed thought tools by Sallust, along with a widespread use of etymology and mythology, which tend to identify various peoples through mythical ancestors and the linguistic motivation of ethnic names.
