Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. The Pony Express: an Epic of the Old West; Charles Rendell Mabey; illustrations by Harris Weberg: The Beverly Craftsmen, Salt Lake City, 1940. From the introduction - The Pony Express was in existence but eighteen months, from April 1860 to October 1861, and yet it has left a deeper impression on men's minds than other enterprises fraught with greater consequences to the West. All over North America, in England and on the Continent, people have thrilled to the stories of the fleet-footed ponies and their brave riders. Nor has the fame that came to them dimmed with the passing years. The author has attempted to take the reader across the wide space that separates the Missouri River from Sacramento and have the spirit of the rider tell what was seen in those stirring days of 1860 and 1861. With the exception of Major Egan, those Pony Express riders whose portraits follow were intimate friends of the author. In his boyhood days he heard many thrilling stories from their lips; they were heroes to him, though a generation older, and it is with much satisfaction that he has been able to make these intrepid horsemen part of this book. Charles Rendell Mabey (1877 - 1959) was an American politician who served as the fifth governor of Utah from 1921 to 1925. Mabey was a banker by trade. He was a member of the Utah House of Representatives from 1913 to 1917 and served again on active duty in the Utah Field Artillery during World War I. He also served for a time as mayor of Bountiful, Utah. This book, 205 pages, is in fine condition. The book is a top-quality production with heavy buckram boards, high quality endpapers and paper in the text. Pages have deckled foredges and the top of the page block is dyed red. The illustrations are very well done. But there is an amateurish feel about the volume. No index of the stories and the pages were not properly guillotined. This dealer had to open at least half the pages. The dust wrapper is high quality paper but not printed. It is in very-good condition due to some fading. A very interesting volume. Harris Weberg (illustratore).…
