French naturalist and photography pioneer H. de la Blanchère (1821-1880) studied chemistry in Nantes in 1848 and subsequently devoted himself to fisheries. After moving to Paris in 1855, Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) introduced him to photography. La Blanchère was one of the first natural scientists to use photography in natural history research. He wrote numerous zoological books, including several on fish (ichthyology), most of which were illustrated with his own photographs.
