Large cotton fabric (203 ×120 cm) roller-printed in red engraved by Pierre Mader representing pastoral scenes probably serving as a bed cover; mordants used were aluminium & woad; 4 pelmets and smaller pieces with the same theme. Printed cotton fabrics decorated with rococco pastoral scenes of courting couples beneath trees with children and animals, including ruins of a classical portico; the composition was inspired by an engraving 'mouton chéri' by [René] Gaillard (c1719-90)1 after a painting by François Boucher (now lost) and an engraving by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet (1731-97) 'Le Colin-Maillard', or 'Love is blind' after a charming painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard c1750-56 symbolizing courtship, chance and lovers' games. Made for the decoration of curtains, hangings or upholstery. The printers Ferdinand Favre and Ferdinand Petitpierre were Swiss immigrant artisans at Nantes. A few insignificant nail rust marks in outer edges, a light water-stain in one piece, otherwise well preserved.
