Number 16 in the California Centennial Editions. Colton was the first alcalde of Monterey under American control and one of the founders of the first American newspaper in California. He then wrote THREE YEARS IN CALIFORNIA, 1850, (see Zamorano 80 and Howes 625)) of which this book is a reissue, relating his experiences in that state.
