His earlier book - DECK AND PORT; OR, INCIDENTS OF A CRUISE IN THE UNITED STATES FRIGATE CONGRESS - was an interesting narrative of a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia in October of 1845, to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and ending at California about nine months later. He then wrote THREE YEARS IN CALIFORNIA, 1850, (see Zamorano 80 and Howes 625)) of which this book is a reissue, relating his experiences in that state.…
