Three bound volumes containing 56 plates and 8 maps. Vol 1 Introduction, then Genesis to the Song of Solomon. Vol II Introduction to the prophets then Isaiah to the Second book of Maccabees (end of Apocrypha) . Vol III (titled "Vol II Part II") comprises the New Testament, an index to 'the most remarkable passages", tables of various things and an index to the principle matters contained in the notes. Bindings are fresh but have rubs, scratches and knocks to edges, with a 2" goudge on rear of vol I (see illus). Free of inscriptions and other extra markings, the plates and maps are ivory in colour, rather than aged. A few pages were badly trimmed by the binder leaving pieces outside the gold edged text block. Some foxing spots at the start of vol 1 - mainly Genesis, otherwise clean, firm and very good state for nearly two hundred years. Very heavy at 9.2kg but price includes delivery. Type: Z The Holy Bible published in three volumes with notes, explanatory and practical; taken principally from the most eminent writers of the United Church of Englnd and Ireland; together with appropriate introductions, tables, indexes, maps, and plans: prepared and arranged by the Reverend George D'Oyly and the Reverend Richard Mant, late domestick chaplains to his grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury. Bound in uniform full black leather with 5 raised bands to the spines. Gilt embossed lettering to the spines and decorative borders to the front and rear boards and between the bands on the spine. All edges gilt. All volumes beautifully illustrated with 8 maps ( one double page and one fold out map) and 55 full page steel engravings as called for - missing one plate 'St. Paul and St. Barnabus at Lystra'. Volume One - Genesis - Song of Solomon. There is rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the board edges and corners. Rubbing to the bands on the spine with an area of rubbing 2cm x 1.5 cm to the panel between the third and fourth band with some loss of gilt to the letters 'EN of GEN and S of Sol. There is a little splitting to the front and rear inner hinges, though the boards remain firmly attached. Several page corner tips have been turned leaving neat creases and one page corner has been turned as the page has not been cropped in line with the rest of the textblock. Light scattered foxing to the fore edges and to a few pages. Volume Two - Isaiah to Maccabes ( the Apocryphal Books are at the end of this volume with a short preface. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, the raised bands on the spine and to the board corners and board edges. The top corner of the front end paper, preliminary blank page, title page and adjacent 4 leaves have been turned, leaving a neat crease. Splitting to the rear inner hinge, though the rear board remains firmly attached. Several tiny niks to the head of the rear end paper with some associated creasing. Some light scattered foxing mainly to the first few pages. Volume ThreeI - Mattthew to Revelation. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the board corners with light rubbing to the bands on the spine. There is splitting between two gatherings in Matthew, the textblock held by two cords. A couple of gatherings are also a little loose, but remain fimrly attached by the cords. A little scattered light foxing. All boards show evidence of some shelf wear. Complete and all volumes internally clean. A good copy of this three volume leather bound set.
