Quarter Leather. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Brown blindstamped cloth with black leather spine, gold lettering and marbled edges. Slight wear at the top of the spine. Otherwise very nicely preserved. The pages are crisp. Light to moderate foxing throughout with heavier foxing on the last few pages which are publisher's ads. No markings. 486, 11pp. Complete work in one volume.

Condizione: Fair/Good. 2nd edition corrected and enlarged, xx [6] 264 (265)-(266) 265-354 [34]pp, engraved portrait frontispiece, lacks the other plate called for by ESTC, contemporary calf (very worn with loss of surface leather, joints cracked, spine split, cords holding but contents slightly shaken, illegible address in ink written on rear cover), green silk bookmark, ink inscription on front free endpaper ("Bought of Mathews Sept. 1791"), ink note on rear pastedown (Pascal was written by Flood"?), small portion torn fron top corner of B5 and B6, small hole in O5 with the loss of two letters, a few of the real names of the characters neatly added, contents generally very clean with only a few light marginal stains, 12mo (171x106mm), ESTC T21365.

Three volumes bound in contemporary full calf with gilt stamping and raised bands to spine. Light rubbing to bindings, darkening to spines; shallow chip to head of Volume III. Tanning and light foxing to interiors, particularly the title page of Volume I, joints repaired at an early date, usual wear and toning due to age; last textual leaf of Volume II is partially detached along the top half. Housed in a custom chemise slipcase with green gilt-stamped morocco spine over green cloth. An important edition which brought Dante's epic work to an English speaking audience for the first time in its completeness, also marking the first publication in English of the Purgatorio and the Paradiso; the Inferno is here is in its fourth publication in English, following the first edition of 1782, and Boyd's 1785 Dublin and London editions. This edition was also instrumental in "assisting to re-establish an audience for Dante, whose reputation had suffered a decline in the previous century." A fantastic set in a beautiful contemporary binding, housed in a custom slipcase.
