TWO VOLUMES BOUND WITHIN A SINGLE BOOK and paged as 1-414, [2], 1-352. Hardcover; H 25.5cm x L 16.25cm. Original full black leather binding with stamped decoration to boards, spine decorated with angel and floral designs as well as lettering all gilt stamped which remains quite bright, boards well rubbed with strong scuffing along edges, board corners and spine ends nicked. All edges marbled with marbled endpapers. Paper clip impression at top edges of front free endpaper and two blank front flyleaves; erased gift inscription on first front flyleaf; 1879 ownership inscription upon rear free endpaper recto. Frontispiece foldout facsimile of Bunyan's will well browned with 7.5cm x 9cm loss at top right corner; frontis well creased and no longer follows original fold-lines. Frontis b/w portrait of Bunyan and pictorial title page have light moisture stains at bottom edges. Both Volume I and Volume II have separate title pages; first quire of Vol. II is slightly pulled. Some sporadic soiling upon interior text leaves with mostly minimal but occasionally moderate foxing; several top corners of leaves are creased from fold-downs. Several of the b/w engraved plates and full-page illustrations are strongly browned and/or foxed which does affect some adjacent leaves; most of the plates appear to be lacking their tissue guards with several being torn or clipped. Features works by Christian writer and minister John Bunyan (1628-1688) including "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," "The Pilgrim's Progress," "Christian Behaviour," "The Glory of the Temple [Solomon's Temple Spiritualized]," "The Jerusalem Sinner Saved," "The Holy War," "The Life and Death of Mr. Badman," "The Heavenly Footman," poetical pieces, sermons, etc. Binding remains firm. HEAVY Package - pickup can be arranged at our public storefront in downtown Manhattan. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning.
