Library No. 31." Quarter leather binding; black spine leather scuffed with chipping at ends, some splitting along joints with front board a bit tenuous but rear boa…rd still fairly firm, browned remnants of paper label at lower sections of the leather board corners, marbled paper boards rubbed with mild wear along edges. Front free endpaper browned with some ink smudging from aforementioned opposing front pastedown inscription. Frontispiece. Some occasional pencil marks amongst text with light stains at fore-edge margins of toned interior leaves. Reverend William Carus Wilson (1791-1859) was the founder of the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge, England which was attended by four Bronte sisters - Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Emily (sister Anne and brother Branwell did not enroll). The sisters disliked the school intensely and the 1825 tuberculosis deaths of eldest sisters Maria and Elizabeth were attributed to the school's harsh conditions. Charlotte Bronte's dislike of the austere Reverend Wilson and his school inspired her JANE EYRE creations of Mr. Brocklehurst and the Lowood Institution. A publishing date for YOUTHFUL MEMOIRS is not provided upon the book's title page but OCLC cites this American Sunday School Union imprint as being issued in 1829 with a only a mere six copies held among member libraries.
