First edition thus - Oxford World's Classics volume 149. xxiii, 260pp. At the end of the book is an 8-page catalogue, dated November 1910, of other volumes in the Oxford World's Classics series. Top edge gilt. Joshua Reynolds' "Discourses on Art" consists of lectures he…delivered to students at the Royal Academy in the late 18th century, focusing on art theory and the education of artists. These discourses summarize three centuries of art theory and influence attitudes leading into the 19th century. These discourses were primarily aimed at educating students at the Royal Academy of Arts, which he helped establish. This edition also includes three letters to 'The Idler', and an introduction by Austin Dobson. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The top front corner is lightly bumped and the spine ends are rubbed. The spine is slightly cocked. The contents are tight and the original red marker ribbon is present but faded and frayed at the end. The free endpapers are browned and a name and date (1911) has been written on the front free endpaper.
