To the right the torso and right arm of the Apostle St. Bartholomew tied to a tree, flayed by an executioner with a knife in his mouth to left. 15,6 x 12,3 cm.*Anonymous copy in reverse of the left part of an etching of 1624 by the Spanish painter and printmaker Jusepe or José de Ribera, showing the martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, in which St. Bartholomew is tied to a tree, flayed by an executioner with a knife in his mouth. Cf. for the original etching Bartsch XX, 81, No. 6. Ribera is considered one of the most important figures in European painting in the 17th century and the Counter-Reformation. He was Spanish, but spent nearly his entire career in Italy. - Cut to border line, small defect to upper right corner, a few brown spots. [(6183)].
