["This study illustrates the last joint undertaking of the Carraccis, undertaken shortly before the departure of Annibale and Agostino for Rome, in the summer of 1595. It is an unusual undertaking for them: in fact it is not a question of painting, side by side , a frieze along the upper parts of the walls, as had happened first in Palazzo Fava and then in Palazzo Magnani. Here, in Abbot Sampieri's ground floor apartment, they had to decorate three vaulted rooms; one for each, therefore; and with scenes in foreshortened view from below. For the first time, in the fresco decoration, they found themselves competing, so to speak, with each other, shortly before their definitive separation. Only the mythological theme keeps them side by side: which is the glory of Hercules, the pagan god of strength used wisely; a widespread myth, because it is easily accepted even by Christian humanistic culture. The unity of style and language developed by the Carracci academy is still at work here.
