Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. First edition. September, 1956, whole number 50, issue number 16 under the name "Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser" (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advert…iser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction.) Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, a whopping 72 pp. - thick, for this fanzine. Near Fine. Small chip top right front and another middle left back (see scans), and that's about it. Not much toning to the contents at all; bright, tight and nearly flawless. This September of 1956 issue is certainly one of the best produced in the entire sequence; Ron Smith was really feeling his oats at this time. Featured are "Weird Tales in Retrospect" by August Derleth, and part 3 of Lin Carter's astonishingly intensive research into the of actual books mentioned by H.P. Lovecraft in his stories. Bless him for the energy he spent. A plethora of great illustrations grace this issue, perhaps more than any other issue (of this or any sci-fi genre fanzine of the era, one would guess): H.R. Van Dongen's cover is joined by a bunch of Jack Gaughan illustrations, plus some by each of Dan Adkins, Cindy (Smith), and Marvin Bryer, plus cartoon illustrations by "Miller" and Dave Jenrette - all managed by Art Director Cindy Smith. Other articles include "Randall Garrett's Memo to E.A. Robinson", Larry T. Shaw's "The Baker Murder Case", Lin Carter's poem "The Return of the Fairies", Edmond Hamilton's "Time Traveling in Ohio", a Jonathan Hoag poem reprint, courtesy of George Wetzel, "To the Grand Canyon of the Ohio", William F. Nolan's "Dark Souls in Jeopardy" (a short modernistic three-act play), Garth Bentley's "Complaint of the EM", and illustrated humor by Dave Jenrette, "People to Avoid at a Convention", as a tri-fold foldout. Also, of course, the original meat of the fanzine, the book reviews, here handled mostly by Carter, Robert Silverberg, and Charles Freudenthal. Even some of the seemingly-now-out-of-date book ad from sellers. Pretty much the peak of fanzine-ism. Collector gold, and scarce as hen's teeth. Please review scans. l-pr1. Henry Richard van Dongen (cover); Jack Gaughan, Cindy (Smith), Roy Hunt, Marvin Bryer, Dan Adkins (illustratore).

1p., 8vo, on the verso of the second leaf of a bifolium, with the Autograph Note by Bentley on the recto of the first leaf. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Smith's letter headed by him 'Private'. He begins: 'Dear Sir | I have not yet received the proof of my article on Hannay, for Temple Bar, which you kindly promised to send me so…me months ago.' He presumes that Bentley is aware that the Echo has 'recently changed hands', and announces that he is 'now the principal Editor, & I may say that one of our new features will be the prompt reviewing of all works which may be sent in by your firm & others'. Unsigned note by George Bentley: 'Tell Clowes [publishers of Temple Bar] to send me two proofs of this article here by return of post, & let me have this letter back as a reminder'.

Front board detached. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Richard Bentley FRS (1662 1742) was an English classical scholar, critic, and theologian. Considered the "founder of historical philology", Bentley is widely credited with establishing the English school of Hellenism. His Paradise Lost (1732), suggested by Queen Caroline, has been criticised as the weakest of his work. He suggested that the poet John Milton had employed both an amanuensis and an editor, who were responsible for clerical errors and interpolations, but it is unclear whether Bentley believed his own position. First Bentley edition, published just sixty-five years after Milton s first edition. Includes beautifully engraved portraits of Milton, one being modeled after his 1629 portrait when he was just 21 years old the other later in his life. Paradise Lost is considered by critics to be Milton s major work, and helped to solidify his reputation as one of the greatest English poets of his time. Written in blank verse, it is widely considered to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written. RAREB1732QSRY 07/24 - HK1934 FORN-SHELF-0466-BB-2410-HKREV225.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Large quarto. 460 pp. Complete with added engraved title-page dated 1708 and half-title. Engraved printer's device on title-pages and old ink ownership inscription on the first title page. Full Contemporary stained calf, professionally and skillfully rebacked spine with f…ive raised bands, gilt red morocco lettering piece, all edges sprinkled red. Very occasional light spotting. Boards with some edge-wear, Frontispiece slightly darkened. Overall a very attractive, notably clean copy with a bright text. "Probably no other poet's works have been so often copied or printed, and hundreds of versions in every modern language have been made of the least translatable of poets. Certainly Horace far outstrips all competitors when it comes to pocket editions: all over the world, where the libraries or even the smaller collections of personalia of the great have been preserved, a well-worn pocket Horace is very frequently among them. . In 1711 Bentley was fighting against the angry fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, who were petitioning the College Visitor, the Bishop of Ely, to remove him from the Mastership. Bentley wished to enlist the support of the Crown (which appoints the master), and he did it -- by dedicating his edition of Horace to Harley, then Prime Minister. "Bentley (1662-1742) was and remains the greatest of English classical scholars. His reputation was made by his Dissertation on Phalaris, the final crushing blow in the 'Battle of the Books' . His immense learning was combined with an equal control in its deployment. Athough he here restricted himself entirely to criticism of the text, and refrained from comment or explanation, in fact his feeling for Horace is revealed in the seven or eight hundred emendations, many of which have found permanent acceptance. Bold yet sensitive, deeply learned and at the same time understanding, his edition is a compound, as Bentley was himself, of temerity, authority and subtlety" (Printing and the Mind of Man, pp. 106-107). Printing and the Mind of Man 178.
