Conducted by the Center for Fire Research under the sponsorship of the Federal Railroad Administration, the study comprises three…main sections. The first is a series of laboratory-scale experiments on the flammability and smoke emission characteristics of materials used in rail car interiors. The second is a set of full-scale calorimeter tests on seat assemblies to compare their contribution to a developing fire. The third is a series of eight full-scale fire tests on mock-ups of the interior of rail cars to assess their potential for fire within a fully furnished vehicle. A comparison of the results of the small-scale laboratory tests with the full-scale mock-up tests are included, with areas of particular interest being the comparison of seating materials, the changes in burning behavior due to changes in geometry, and the adequacy of existing flammability guidelines. The book concludes that the burning behavior of the fully furnished mock-ups is critically dependent upon the geometry of the interior and the interaction of materials during the full-scale mock-up tests, emphasizing the importance of considering the system design and material interaction when assessing the individual fire performance of a material.
