The aim of this study was to determine the mechanisms of stem borer resistance in selected weevil resistant inbred lines and determine their combining ability as well as the correlation between stem borer resistance and weevil resistance. The research was conducted at National Crop Resources Research Institute's (NaCRRI) main station in Namulonge, central Uganda. The genetic material used include 4 inbred lines resistant to weevil (locally adapted) and 6 stem borer resistant inbred lines (exotic lines). The crossing of parental materials was carried out using North Carolina 2 mating design. The hybrids obtained from the first season were planted using alpha lattice design.The study identified 5 inbreds that combined well for leaf damage, number of entry/exit holes and tunnel length, 6 hybrids resistant to stem borer and 1 hybrid resistant to both weevil and stem borer. The correlation between stem borer resistance and weevil resistance was non-significant.…

In this study, the mode of inheritance of resistance to a prevalent RYMV strain in Uganda was determined for resistant lines (upland NERICAs 8, 11, 12, 13 and Gigante (an O. sativa lowland variety) crossed with susceptible lines (lowland NERICAs 4, 6, 10 and IR64 (an O. sativa lowland variety)) in a full diallel mating design. Segregating F2 progeny were planted in field and screen house in -lattice design and inoculated by standard mechanical procedures. Reciprocal effects were significant (P0.001), GCA effects were significant (P0.001) and larger than SCA effects. The narrow sense coefficient of genetic determination based on genotype means was relatively high in screen house (76%) and field (84%) experiments. These results suggest additive gene effects were more important than non- additive effects, and selecting in F2 or F3 generations can be effective. Significant reciprocal effects implies the need for careful choice of male and female parents in hybridisation programs to achieve RYMV resistance in the offspring.…

It occurs in form of complete wilting and death of affected leaves. It is widespread throughout several rice growing countries of Asia, Australia, America and Africa, contributing to substantial yield losses of up to 50%. The use of resistant cultivars is the cost-effective,environmentally-friendly and sustainable way to control the rice bacterial leaf blight among resource-poor farmers. However,detailed information on pathogen diversity in Uganda is not available. Furthermore, the genetic mechanism for resistance carried by the germplasm assembled in Uganda is not yet elucidated.
