She was sent by her parents to be educated in England, but returned to India where she married an engineer, Charles Perrin, who worked for the India Public Works Department. Charles was put in charge of building an aqueduct in the jungle, and so Alice Perrin took to writing as a way to alleviate boredom. Her collection of ghost stories, "East of Suez" (1901), was compiled and published after her return to England, and she continued to write novels and stories about her time in India. ** The title story, "The Sistrum", has a junk-shop collector finding an African musical instrument which, having been used in sacrificial ceremonies, carries its own memories.
