Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine over beige boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. A gripping chronicle of the ferocious twenty-year struggle between the English monarch and the feudal lords of Ireland, The Twilight Lords describes the first authentic colonial venture in English history, a venture that held captive a whole generation of the best that Ireland and England could muster. By the time the last and the greatest of the "rebels" surrendered, Elizabeth was dead, two waves of English settlers had been exterminated, and the southern part of Ireland had become a barren wilderness. Condition: Small stain to title. Jacke back flap creased else near fine in like jacket. …

Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Mint. First Edition. This fine copy is bound in cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bright and square. There is a small neat inscription to the front paste down which is hidden by the dust wrapper front flap. The unclipped dust wrapper is in mint condition. This is a highly readable, and indeed compelling, narrative history of Elizabeth I's Irish wars, with the bulk of the text concentrating on the Desmond Wars in Munster. The story is one of almost unrelieved horror, and indeed some of the incidental details are quite stomach-churning. The period is a pivotal one, not just in Anglo-Irish relations, but in the larger European context as well, in that during it newly-born religious enmities and emerging feelings of national identity created a sense of denial of the other party's humanity as never before. This is the twentieth-century experience of Bosnia, Kossovo and Afghanistan translated into a sixteenth-century Irish setting - indeed in some ways a prelude to the Thirty Years' War. The scale of devastation, the ruthlessness of the protagonists on both sides, the rapid descent into bestiality and the near impossibility of achieving any final settlement other than by outright massacre and exhaustion of the other side makes absorbing but depressing reading. Nobody comes well out of this history, unless it is the peasantry who, manipulated and expended like pawns by their own chieftains, somehow endured despite all, however diminished in numbers. Ref RR6. …

Hardback. Condizione: New. Americans have long viewed the Middle Ages with an emphasis on Chaucer and the French and Latin traditions. As a result, the later developments of European literature and history often take us by surprise. From our perspective, the Reformation, the birth of capitalism, and the new humanism appear as if from nowhere. The part missing is the history and literature of the German Middle Ages. While German and French publications in this field are common, the world of the German Middle Ages has not been addressed in English for many years. Filling the gap for non-German speakers, The Orphan Stone blends history and literature in a strong narrative line to portray the critical years of the medieval Reich through the eyes of the poets of the holy Roman Empire--the Minnesinger.Modelled after the French Troubadours, the Minnesinger created brilliant lyrics and narratives that are the foundation of much of German literature and thought. Familiarity with their work and the historical context in which they operated is essential to fully understanding the culture of Freud, Wagner, Mann, Rilke, and writers as diverse as Musil and Kundera. Even the Nazis borrowed symbolism and pageantry from the Minnesinger in their distortions of history. In The Orphan Stone, the Minnesinger come alive as individuals and shake us with their sophistication about men and women in love, and with their ethical sense and human understanding. Two in particular, Walther von der Vogelweide and Gottfried von Strassburg, are acknowledged, along with Goethe, as the finest poetic talents in the German language. The Minnesinger created Tristan, Parzival, the Nibelungs, Kriemhild, and Poor Henry. They also endowed a jewel in the imperial crown, the Orphan Stone of history, with symbolic powers to elevate and ennoble all people on whom it shined. Along with this fable, The Orphan Stone contains many of our most cherished stories and universal myths which were dreamed by the Minnesinger of the medieval Reich.…
