Bogart musste über zwanzig Nebenrollen durchstehen, bis er als Dashiell Hammetts Detektiv Sam Spade in »Die Spur des Falken« schlagartig berühmt wurde. Der Star der Warner Brothers Studios übertraf diese Leistung noch als Raymond Chandlers Detektiv Philip Marlowe in »Tote schlafen fest«, einem Klassiker des Film noir. Kern der Legende aber war das Melodram »Casablanca«, in dem Bogart den einsamen, sich an seinem Whiskey festhaltenden Barbesitzer Rick Blaine verkörperte. Mindestens so bedeutend war »Haben und Nichthaben«, in dem es zwischen Bogart und seiner 19-jährigen Partnerin Lauren Bacall, die im Film debütierte und seine vierte Frau wurde, vor erotischer Energie knisterte. Bogarts Lieblingsregisseur war John Huston, der ihm mit der Rolle des alkoholseligen Kapitäns in »The African Queen« 1952 zum Oscar verhalf. Bogart kultivierte im Privatleben gern das Leinwand image des »tough guy« mit dem Spruch »The world is three drinks behind« und starb 1957 an Krebs.
