Kern der Legende aber war das Melodram »Casablanca«, in dem Bogart den einsamen, sich an seinem Whiskey festhaltenden Barbesitzer Rick Blaine verkörperte. Mindestens so bedeutend war »Haben und Nichthaben«, in dem es zwischen Bogart und seiner 19-jährigen Partnerin Lauren Bacall, die im Film debütierte und seine vierte Frau wurde, vor erotischer Energie knisterte. Bogarts Lieblingsregisseur war John Huston, der ihm mit der Rolle des alkoholseligen Kapitäns in »The African Queen« 1952 zum Oscar verhalf.
