A lifelong l…ove of baseball led him to membership in the Society for American Baseball Research, where he became an active member of the Biographical Committee, researching the lives of early major league baseball players. Morris is a highly respected baseball researcher, and is often interviewed or cited by major media outlets such as National Public Radio. He has written or co-authored nine books (as of 2014), including the major two-volume work A Game of Inches: The Stories Behind the Innovations that Shaped Baseball in 2006, the first book to ever win both the Society for American Baseball Research's Seymour Medal and the Casey Award. In 2012, he served on the Baseball Hall of Fame's pre-integration committee. Derived from a Kirkus review: In the three decades before the Civil War, baseball was in its infancy. There were no standardized rules for the game, much less a consensus on what to call it. Using first-person recollections, recorded statistics and newspaper clippings, Morris identifies the era as crucial to baseball's emergence as the national sport. Some facts about the early game will likely surprise modern enthusiasts: e.g., the procedures before designated pitchers; players having to actually hit a player with the ball to record an out; and the traditional use of a single ball during the game. Morris puts baseball's far-flung evolution in context, jetting from town to town across the Eastern seaboard and the Midwest to illustrate how other locations began to adopt the game-or resist it via strict laws that prohibited public ball playing. The page block edges don't have the usual foxing, but there is a small area of light staining to the bottom of the fore-edge - not affecting the interior pages. Internally the book is near fine with no inscriptions or other annotations. Pages clean. No creases or tears. There is a very slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with the fabulous wraparound surrealistic illustration taken from the painting 'The Expectant Valley' by Desmond Morris. The dustwrapper has been neatly square price-clipped, but is otherwise complete, with some creasing and rubbing at the edges, particularly at the top of the spine, which also has a couple of small areas of loss to the surface colour (please see scans). No chips or tears, and there is hardly any of the usual fading to the colour on the spine. Dustwrapper bright and clean. ***224 pages including a Bibliography, Index and Key to bibliography at the back of the book. 222mm x 140mm. ***'Richard Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. The book was soon reprinted with corrections in the same year, and again in 1977 and copies of the first printing are now quite scarce. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards, w…ith gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, with just some light creasing at the top and tail of the spine. No other bumps or creases. Corners sharp. The edges of the page block are quite heavily foxed, but hardly affecting the interior pages - just a few spots in the fore-edge margins. Internally the book is also very good, with the original owner's name 'P. D. Morant' in ink at the top of the front free endpaper. A loosely inserted postcard mentions that the owner was Environmental Scientist Patricia Digby Morant. No creases or tears to the pages. ***In a near fine dustwrapper, with the fabulous wraparound surrealistic illustration taken from the painting 'The Expectant Valley' by Desmond Morris. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95 net, and is complete, with hardly any faults. No chips, tears or creasing, and none of the usual fading to the colour on the spine. An atheist, he is well known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design. Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. With his book "The Extended Phenotype" (1982), he introduced into evolutionary biology the influential concept that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment.
