McCulloh (1818-1894) born in Baltimore MD graduated College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1836; later studied chemistry with James Curtis Booth in Philadelphia and was a contributor to Booth s 1850 Encyclopedia of Chemistry; employed as chemist at U.S. Mint in Philadelphia (1846-9). Appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy Princeton University (1849); moved to Columbia University in 1854. In 1863 consulting chemist to Confederate Nitre and Mining Bureau- expelled from Columbia.
