Richard Lionel Spittel (1881-1969) was a Ceylonese physician and author, and one of the foremost experts on the Vedda c…ommunity. An avid nature-lover, Spittel made many trips to the jungles of Ceylon, gaining much knowledge of the flora and fauna and the aborigines of the island, the Veddas. Based on his ethnographic studies, he authored several books that gained much fame during his lifetime. This work was originally published in 1933 and, except for slight revision, the text remains the same but with the addition of three new chapters. It includes accounts of the Veddas, tracker's tales, snakes, Kataragama, the Devil bird, beauty spots of Ceylon, etc. There are also several verses by the author. The book is bound in the original green boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the spine has faded to a light brown colour. There is slight fading along the top edge of both boards and a dent to the rear spine edge about 2" from the top spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. Pages 135 to 142 protrude slightly from the fore edge of the text block.
