Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. MY HERO, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DONALD RICHBERG, INDISCREET MEMOIRS OF AN EVENTFUL BUT UNHEROIC LIFE (subtitled on dust jacket INDISCREET MEMOIRS OF FIFTY YEARS IN TOP-LEVEL POLITICS), Donald R. Richberg, illustrated with photos and editorial carto…ons, hardcover with clipped dust jacket, 1st edition and 1st printing (per publisher's custom),1954. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The black cloth boards are in very good condition (very slight bumping of spine and of one corner). The dust jacket is in good condition (crinkles and chipping along edges, rubbing, discolored spine). 8 ½ x 6, 367 pages, 25 ounces. XX [From the dust jacket flaps] The startling title of Donald Richberg's autobiography is his sardonic way of saying he himself has never measured up to the heroic ideals of his youth and that in a half century of association with great public figures he has never met a man he deemed worthy of hero worship. In this frank, witty, and stimulating volume, Mr. Richberg paints a vivid portrait of the American political scene in the first half of the twentieth century, in which he himself played an important role. In his college days at the University of Chicago he met William Jennings Bryan and fell under the spell of the oratory that fired the idealism of .so many young men of his day. Later, inevitably, Mr. Richberg found himself in the front ranks of the Progressive Party and in close association with Teddy Roosevelt. In the twenties he was in the thick of the battle, ghosting speeches, helping shape policy, and campaigning. Then in 1932 Donald Richberg first met Franklin D. Roosevelt. Of Richberg, F. D. R. was reported to have said later, "There's a man I want to have near me in Washington." And Richberg, sensing in Roosevelt the vitality and vision desperately needed in the midst of economic chaos, offered his services to the campaign. Soon he rose to national prominence, first as Chief Counsel (later Chairman) of the N. R.A., then as head of the National Emergency Council, a job that earned him the unofficial title of "Assistant President." Only in 1935 after the Supreme Court had declared the N.R.A. unconstitutional did he resign from government serice and return to private practice in Washington. He also carried on the important negotiations following Mexico's expropriation of foreign oil properties, which resulted in a successful settlement of this vexing problem. Donald Richberg is a noted raconteur and his book is studded with amusing anecdotes. There are lively and incisive chapters on Coolidge, Hoover, Truman, and of course, F. D. R. , with intimate glimpses of scores of other prominent figures, including Henry Wallace, Harold Ickes, Harry Hopkins, and Henry Morgenthau. About himself, Mr. Richberg is refreshingly frank, expressing himself with candor on his own philosophical metamorphosis from impassioned liberal to concerned conservative.
