Tretchikoff has signed the inside front stiff marbled card board by hand and hand dated his signature 20-12-52, the year of publication in 1952. The final raised plate, called Blue Monday and featuring the artist slumped with his easel, is also hand s…igned and inscribed: " To my dearest friend Peggy, and cut throat enemy in canasta. V. Tretchikoff 20.12.52". . Near fine excellent condition with all 12 raised plates including the self portrait on the folder cover. In marbled card stiff covers. Dust jacket is a wrap around folder cover, which is missing the front flaps but has gilt title and raised plate illustration on front and fully intact. As issued with the spiral binding. Signed and inscribed to Peggy ( Margaret) Roscoe who after her Cape Town years lived near Hartley, Southern Rhodesia ( now Chegutu, Zimbabwe ), but socialised with Tretchikoff on numerous occasions, including canasta sessions with him and his wife at their splendid mansion in Bishopscourt, Cape Town. Her iconic painting by Tretchikoff called Crawfish Seller which she bought prior to 1952, was later exhibited in Durban with her permission in 1959, and became one of the subjects of the artist's many and profuse lithographic reproductions, all iconic monuments to mid century "kitsch". She later made a Christmas card of her painting on a raised plate, a scarce original of which was also for sale by us at the time of listing but was then sold by us. The price has been reduced to less than $28 per full page raised plate and $56 for the signed and inscribed plate, what a bargain! Would frame beautifully. The plates are not for sale individually, you have to buy the whole book. Inscribed by Author(s).

The front cover has a tipped-in self portrait, signed - on the cover - by Tretchikoff. The signature, alas, has been smeared by water/ damp. It is still clear. Inside…the cataglogue are three loose tipped-in plates: "Xosa Chief", "Zulu Girl", "Mother and Child". Each are signed, apparently on different occasions as the inks are of different colours. The paper mounts on which the plates are affixed have some handling marks, wear. The plates are in excellent condition. They are vivid, visceral, vivacious, bold, very clean and clear and very sure, generous. All are suitable for framing. The catalogue is tidy, clean, smart. fk (cabinet 3).
