Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. It is set in the 16th century and tells the adventures of Lazaro de Tormes, from his birth until he gets married. It is an ironic and harsh portrait of society at the time. The text is written as a very long letter and the events are told in first person - it is the protagonist who is speaking. Because of its moralising and pessimistic tone, and because of the realistic elements, as well as the structure and first person narrative, "Lazarillo de Tormes" is unanimously considered to be the precursor of picaresque novel, a genre that was widely developed throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. An important work of Spains Golden Age of literature, Lazarillo de Tormes portrays the clever ploys of a young Salamancan boy determined to outsmart his long string of masters. This Spanish novella was first published, during the Spanish Inquisition, by an author who wished to remain anonymous due to the works heretical content. Young Lazarillo is an improbable hero of his time, for he comes from a poor and multiracial family who desperately apprentice him to a blind beggar after committing a crime. Lazarillo soon proves himself to be resourceful and resistant to the corrupt clergymen he must serve. Banned for heresy due to its highly critical portrayal of both the aristocracy and Catholic Church of the 16th century, this work came to provide a model for Cervantes and many future authors, like Twain, who explored the picaresque genre. Though originally published at great risk to the author, Lazarillo de Tormes is today an entertaining story of a boy who ingenuously survives his own childhood and makes something of himself despite the corruption that he must continually overcome. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. -Del prologo de Francisco RicoENGLISH DESCRIPTION A new edition of Don Quixote, an international literature masterpiece, in the care of Francisco Rico, a Spanish philologist and historian. Includes additional complementary material, bibliographies, academic texts, and references. At the time when Don Quixote was first published, its success fell far from the respect and admiration that the work enjoys today. The books popularity was immediate and vast. Some of its peculiar features stand out: the appearance of the poor nobleman, the squires roughest moments, Rocinantes hyperbolic weakness. Considering the emphasis on the comic dimensions of the work and understanding it as a piece that went against the preconceived idea of chivalry books, does not mean that the seventeenth century did not appreciate other of its allures like, the protagonist appearing not only as a delusional and funny type, but in his same madness found positive and exemplary traits. Don Quixote is not one of those books composed by a single stroke of inspiration and then revised in a couple of stages of meticulous work until every detail is perfectly adjusted to achieve a perfect final work. It is a living book, which is continually remade, one that grows and grows with each step. From the prologue by Francisco Rico Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
