La controverse historique entre Louis Le Chatelier et Théophile Ricour porte sur la méthode technique et la sécurité du freinage à contre-vapeur des locomotives à vapeur à la fin des années 1860. Bien que le nom de "Le Chatelier" soit mondialement célèbre en chimie pour le principe de modération développé par son fils Henry Le Chatelier, c'est son père, l'ingénieur des mines Louis Le Chatelier, qui s'est opposé à l'ingénieur des chemins de fer Théophile Ricour. Au XIXe siècle, freiner des trains lourds en sécurité représentait un défi majeur. Louis Le Chatelier inventa et popularisa le système de marche à contre-vapeur. Ce procédé consistait à inverser la distribution de la locomotive pour utiliser la pression des pistons comme force de freinage mécanique. Cependant, cette technique présentait un défaut critique : l'aspiration des gaz chauds, de fumées et de poussières de la boîte à fumée directement dans les cylindres, risquant de détruire les joints et de gripper le moteur. Pour y remédier, Le Chatelier injectait un mélange d'eau chaude et de vapeur (le système d'échappement par injection). En 1869, l'ingénieur Théophile Ricour publia un ouvrage critique intitulé Notice sur le tube d'inversion, ou La machine locomotive transformée en générateur de chaleur pour produire l'arrêt des trains. Cette dispute scientifique et industrielle passionna le monde des transports de l'époque. Elle força les ingénieurs à perfectionner l'analyse thermodynamique des pistons. Le système Le Chatelier resta très utilisé pour la marche à contre-vapeur. En parallèle, Ricour devint célèbre pour ses innovations complémentaires, notamment les distributeurs cylindriques équilibrés (dits "segments Ricour"), largement adoptés plus tard pour améliorer l'étanchéité et réduire les frottements dans les moteurs ferroviaires. …
