Med.-Rat und Prof. der Chir. in Marburg, geb. zu Stuttgart 26. März 1817, studierte seit 1834 in Tübingen, zusammen mit Wunderlich und Griesinger, mit denen ihn enge Freundschaft lebenslänglich verband, wurde 1838 approbiert und promovierte 1839 mit der Diss.: "Die Humoralätiologie". Er begab sich darauf auf wissenschaftliche Reisen nach Würzburg, Halle, Wien, Paris, kehrte 1841 nach Tübingen zurück und habilitierte sich daselbst 1841 für Chirurgie. Noch in demselben Jahre gründete er zusammen mit den schon erwähnten Freunden Griesinger und Wunderlich das "Archiv f. physiol. Heilkunde", in dem er selbst eine Reihe von Aufsätzen veröffentlichte. Zugleich entwickelte er auch sonst eine fruchtbare litterar. Thätigkeit, publizierte 1844 sein "Handbuch d. anat. Chir.", das 1884 in 8. und letzter Aufl. erschien, ferner 1845 die "Allgem. Chir." und 1847 das "Chir.-anat. Vademecum" (7. Aufl. 1889), Werke, die sich sämtlich grosser Beliebtheit erfreuten und R.'s Namen weithin bekannt gemacht haben. 1846 legte R. seine Privatdozentur nieder und siedelte als Oberamts-Wundarzt nach Reutlingen über, von wo er, einem Ruf als Nachfolger des nach Dresden übergesiedelten Zeis folgend, als ord. Prof. d. Chir. nach Marburg ging. Hier lebte, lehrte und wirkte er bis zu seinem 15. Dez. 1888 erfolgten Tode, nachdem er jedoch schon zu Anfang d. J. infolge von Kränklichkeit sich hatte pensionieren lassen müssen. - R. hat als Chirurg wie als Ophthalmolog eine praktisch wie litterar. überaus fruchtbare Thätigkeit entwickelt. Die Zahl seiner Einzelaufsätze übersteigt 150. Titel und ausführliche Inhaltsanalysen sind in der prächtigen Gedächtnisschrift gegeben, welche R.'s Sohn Karl, gegenwärtig Chirurg in Wiesbaden, zusammengestellt hat (Wiesbaden 1892). Der Nekrolog an der Spitze, dem auch die wichtigsten Daten dieser Biogr. entlehnt sind, stammt aus der Feder von R. U. Krönlein in Zürich.
