En 1816, Mälzel patentaba en París un aparato, inventado por Winkel, consistente en un péndulo oscilante que servía para que el compositor pudiera fijar exactamente el tiempo o movimiento en la ejecución. Según parece, el primero en utilizarlo fue Beethoven, y a este… tema se dedica el presente volumen. Heinz-Kñaus Metzger destina un primer trabajo a analizar la intepretación de Beethoven, al que siguen otros en los que se estudia la metronomización llevada a cabo por el compositor. Ejemplo, Arnold Shönberg Sobre metronomización, Peter Stadler Beethoven y el metrónomo, además de ensayos de documentación a cargo de Rainer Riehn La relación de Beethoven con el metrónomo, Un ultraje musical, o cómo se han desoído las indicaciones de Beethoven y, Metronomizaciones originales de Beethoven; metronomizaciones de Czerny y Moscheles, basasdas en sus recuerdos, y de Kolisch y Leibowitz, deducidas por comparación de los caracteres. Se cierra la obra con un trabajo de Dietmar Holland Grabaciones ejemplares de las composiciones de Beethoven y una bibliografía selecta compilada por Rainer Riehn. . La obra es de lectura obligada para cuántos deseen conocer esta faceta de la composiciòn, en especial referida a los primeros pasos de un instrumento tan útil, que Beethoven empleó en un canon a cuatro voces que después se convirtió en el tema de la Octava sinfonía. En su obra Las pasiones musicales del director de orquesta Johannes Kreisler, el escritor Ernst Theodor Amadeus Huffmann (1776-1822), pone de manifiesto la incapacidad de la burguesía provinciana de su tiempo para comprender el arte de la música. Para ello relata la…situación de un músico requerido insistentemente, en una reunión social, para que improvise de la forma maravillosa que él sabe hacerlo. Obligado al fin, el músico se venga de la concurrencia interpretando las variaciones de Bach. Los invitados empiezan a desfilar unos tras otros. Al llegar a la variación 30, sólo queda el criado, Gottlieb, el único que está dotado de talento musical, a quien el músico recomienda que cuelgue la odiosa levita de criado y acuda a recibir lecciones de música. Este relato sirve para el inicio del primero de los trabajos que conforman el presente estudio, los autores nos introducen en el análisis de las Variaciones Goldberg compuesta por Bach en 1742. Siguen otros estudios debidos a especialistas como Martin Zench, Berthold Türcke y Wolfgang Schreiber. Lectura obligada para el conocimiento de uno de los aspectos más interesantes de la obra de Johann Sebastian Bach, maestro en este tipo de composiciones. LIBRO.
