Riley tells of their trip and some incidents along the way and of the return trip by Old Fort Laramie and Ft. Kearney. His next trip was to Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory. Has a section on border troubles and Missouri Bushwackers, Quantrel and Kansas Redlegs. His next trip was to Fort Union New Mexico. Riley includes a section on Indian Troubles and another trip to Fort Union.
