Noten, biografische gegevens, literatuur en register staan achterin, waarbij een verklaring van termen geen luxe geweest zou zijn. Als catalogus geeft het werk een breder kader aan de tentoonstelling in het Van Goghmuseum, maar is geen handleiding tijdens het bezoek. Het niveau van de artikelen verschilt van duidelijke taal voor de leek tot een wetenschappelijk betoog. Men krijgt een zeer goed inzicht in de kunst van deze tijd.
