Highlighting the ontological role of emotional investment, this book sets out to show that historical patterns are best understood in relation to ideas with an emotio…nal undercurrent. - Examining perception in the discourses of 1900, this study aims to uncover some of the less apparent emotional undercurrents of scientific theories of understanding. Connections are seen as implicit, but nonetheless important discursive forces. In looking at perception at a time when it was under re-definition as the humanities faced dominance of the natural sciences in the 19th century, this study is concerned with a figure that is always emotionally invested. Its hypothesis is that the sometimes hidden 'investment' plays an ontological role that we cannot see if we hold that words and ideas simply emerge in a historical continuity. The opposite is the case: historical patterns are best understood in relation to ideas with an emotional undercurrent, not without this, or despite it. This book sets out to show this in relation to the anthropology of connection and vis-à-vis theories of perception from approximately 1880-1930. Dealing with both literary and philosophical texts, it argues that the Romantic imagination performs a…critique of rationalism. In reflecting on the fragmentary, the Romantics require the reader to both imagine and to question this as a hermeneutic process. As such, they understand writing to be an experiment in memory, both individual and cultural. This book is a study of the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Novalis, Tieck and also of the utopian project of Romanticism itself. Methodologically, it is informed by what Foucault termed the archaeological approach to discourse as well as by psychoanalysis and literary theory. Examining points of contact as well of divergence between Kantian epistemology and Romantic nature philosophy, it also highlights the correspondences between literature, philosophy and science. Above all, it treats Romanticism as an experiment in the portrayal of ambivalent modern identity.

Recueil de la plus grande rareté, « plus rare encore que la première collective » (Quérard), constitué des quatre premières éditions des…comédies de la marquise de Montesson, vraisemblablement exécutées dans une imprimerie particulière. Il précède la première collective publiée à douze exemplaires seulement en 1782-1785 sous le titre Oeuvres anonymes (8 vol.).Charlotte-Jeanne Béraud de La Haie de Riou (Paris, 4 octobre 1738 ? 6 février 1806), veuve à trente et un ans du marquis de Montesson, séduisit par sa beauté et son intelligence Louis Philippe d'Orléans (1725-1785), petit-fils du Régent. Elle l'épousa secrètement le 23 avril 1773 avec l'autorisation de Louis XV, qui refusa néanmoins que lui soit accordé le titre de duchesse d'Orléans, rang trop élevé pour elle. Elle conserva son nom et son titre de marquise.Au Palais-Royal et dans son théâtre de la rue d'Antin, elle organisa des fêtes brillantes et joua dans des comédies qu'elle avait composées elle-même, dont Grimm fit l'éloge dans sa Correspondance littéraire. Son salon devint l'un des rendez-vous les plus courus de la société parisienne d'Ancien Régime. À la mort du duc d'Orléans en 1785, elle vécut modestement, fut emprisonnée durant la Terreur, libérée après le 9 Thermidor, et protégée sous l'Empire par la sympathie de Napoléon, auprès duquel la recommandait son amitié avec Joséphine de Beauharnais.I.
