Un jour de 1989, elle apprend qu'un mystérieux troupeau de chevaux sauvages erre dans le désert brûlant de Namibie, là où personne ne soupçonne leur existence, tant les rigueurs du climat rendent leur présence incroyable. Depuis la découverte de diamants en 1907, ce territoire est déclaré zone interdite d'accès. Déterminée et persévérante, elle réussit toutefois à obtenir l'autorisation de s'y rendre. Avec une tente pour tout abri, elle vit plusieurs mois à leurs côtés pour les connaître et étudier leur comportement. Parlant avec eux le langage universel des chevaux, elle réussit à faire sa place parmi ces fantômes du désert qui ignorent tout des humains.
