Physical description; viii, 243 pages: illustrations; 32 cm. Notes; Published on the occasion of the exhibition Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia, Philadelphia Museum of Art, June 20-September 3, 2012. Includes bibliographical references and index. Rishel -- Re-visioning Arcadia: Henri Matisse's Bathers by a river / Stephanie D'Alessandro -- "Dream the myth onwards": visions of Arcadia in German expressionist art / Tanja Pirsig-Marshall. Summary; The notion of a golden age set in an earthly paradise has long kindled the human imagination. Virgil envisioned such a place of bucolic pleasures-erotic and unsullied, sometimes shadowed by blunted desires and doubts-in his Eclogues, set in the valley of Arcadia in ancient Greece. His poems defined for Western art and literature a theme that continues to this day. Their resonance as a foundation for European painters around 1900 is the subject of this beautifully illustrated catalogue, which focuses on three monumental paintings-Paul Gauguin's Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897-98), Paul Cezanne's The Large Bathers (1906), and Henri Matisse's Bathers by a River (1909-10, 1913, and 1916-17). Other masterpieces by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Nicolas Poussin, and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes establish the high value given to Arcadia in the history of French painting. These are joined by major works by Henri Edmond Cross, Robert Delaunay, Andre Derain, Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, and Paul Signac, as well as paintings by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Natalia Goncharova to suggest the vitality of this subject outside the canonical French definitions. Distinguished scholars place these artists within the larger context of this inventive period in art history. Subjects; Gauguin, Paul 1848-1903. Ce?zanne, Paul 1839-1906. Matisse, Henri 1869-1954. Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: good. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. 600 pages. 504 illustrations, including 242 plates in full color. Chronology. List of Sources Cited. List of Exhibitions Cited. Index of Names. Index of Illustrated Works by Cezanne. Concordance. DJ has some wear, soiling, and edge tears. This was published in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, This volume was published in conjunction with the exhibition Cezanne held at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, September 25, 1995, to January 7, 1996. The Tate Gallery, London, February 8 to April 28, 1996, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, May 30 to August 18, 1996. Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 - 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne's exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all." This catalogue offers an exploration of Cezanne's work. It includes catalogue entries on nearly 230 paintings, watercolors and drawings. These works are all reproduced in colour and are accompanied by informative commentaries, further insights are provided by comparative illustrations of almost another 300 works. The book traces Cezanne's stylistic evolution from the early dark and violent canvases to the luminous works that gave different qualities to Impressionism, and finally to the late paintings that broke fresh ground. Also explored here is the artist's preoccupation with several themes and motifs - Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers and still life. The comprehensive review of the critical response to the artist's work reveals the many interpretations of Cezanne's legacy that have been put forward. A chronology details the life and career of the artist. …

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Yale University Press, United States, 2006. Hardback in fine condition, free from annotations, inscriptions or creases. Contents are tight, clean, complete and crisp. Spine remains undamaged. Dust jacket in near fine condition with negligible shelfwear and some curling at the extremities. It looks unread. A magnificent survey of the rich and varied arts in Latin America from 1492 to the end of the colonial era Essays by Gauvin Alexander Bailey, Clara Bargellini, Dilys E. Blum, Elizabeth Hill Boone, Marcus Burke, Mitchell A. Codding, Thomas B. F. Cummins, Cristina Esteras Martin, M. Concepcion Garcia Saiz, Ilona Katzew, Adrian Locke, Gridley McKim-Smith, Alfonso Ortiz Crespo, Jorge F. Rivas P., Nuno Senos, Edward J. Sullivan, and Marjorie Trusted. By the end of the 16th century, Europe, Africa, and Asia were connected to North and South America via a vast network of complex trade routes. This led, in turn, to dynamic cultural exchanges between these continents and a proliferation of diverse art forms in Latin America. This monumental book transcends geographic boundaries and explores the history of the confluence of styles, materials, and techniques among Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas through the end of the colonial era--a period marked by the independence movements, the formation of national states, and the rise of academic art. Written by distinguished international scholars, essays cover a full range of topics, including city planning, iconography in painting and sculpture, East-West connections, the power of images, and the role of the artist. Beautifully illustrated with over 450 works-many published for the first time-this book presents a spectacular selection of decorative arts, textiles, silver, sculpture, painting, and furniture. Scholarly entries on some three hundred works highlight the various cultural influences and differences throughout this vast region.
