While editors and publishers in the past have always described my short form poems as haiku, I prefer to call the majority of the short form poems of the type in this collection as One-strike Poems, since the term 'haiku' relates to a very different cultural and historical mind-set and developmental literary process. And long before my awareness of haiku, the source of my short form poems came originally from my interest in the chants and prayers of indigenous peoples, and then later, graffiti on the walls of the various cities I either lived in or visited. Resulting in my early poems often being of an aphoristic or epigrammatic nature. My poems at this time were also sourced in my encounters with an object or event, when a poem might immediately and spontaneously arise out of the experience and be committed, just as it is, to any piece of paper to hand, in that moment. And in the few instances where any change was made afterwards, it was only in the moving of a word or two from one line to another, or on very rare occasions, perhaps the changing of a single word. (Malcolm Ritchie)Comments on previous publications"Malcolm Ritchie's poems have a subtle life-enhancing tone which I would have thought was rare in most publishers' lists. Finely turned nature poetry - witty, and always with a sharp, unexpected twist.Tapestries of linguistic miracles; wryly celebratory and delightful. Some real gems; little masterpieces." -Heathcote Williams".small lines on the great earth, Ritchie's 2014 collection of deft short poems that illuminate his life in Japan and on Arran. Like their Japanese antecedents, they contain much humour, considerable insight and a deftness of touch that brings the most everyday words to vivid life. These poems are of the process." -Billy Mills.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Fine. First U.S. Editioin. 230 Pages. Although traditional medicine is still widely practiced in Japan, some forms of it are extremely rare. One of these is Seiki-jutsu, an ancient form of healing based on focusing and transmitting 'vital life force from healer to patient. One of the few remaining practitioners of this pre-Buddhist art is an extraordinary shamanic healer named Ikuko Osumi. Malcolm Ritchie is Ikuko Osumi's 'deshi,' or apprentice, and the first Westerner to be initiated in the art of Seki-jutsu. He recounts Osumi's life story from her earliest years as a sensitive, psychic child to her development as a healer. Included are case histories of her work and chapters on the basic method, philosophy, and ritual of Seiki-jutsu. The second part of 'The Shamanic Healer' is a personal narrative of Ritchie's own experiences of Seiki power and the dramatic story of his initiation and training as Osumi's apprentice. His account recalls the tremendous personal transformation that was necessary for him to develop as a practitioner of Seiki-jutsu.

First edition New in shrinkwrap. Softcover. Direct from the publisher. 392 pages.Through this memoir, Malcolm Ritchie take us on a journey from early childhood trauma and damage, onto a quest for self-knowledge and healing. He describes how his life led him from an interest in the paranormal, to Jungian psychology, Buddhism and shamanic practices. Along the way, we have his discharge from the Royal Air Force; his expulsion from art school; his theft, with three friends, of a Rembrandt from a museum; his encounter and association with Dr. John Layard Ð anthropologist and Jungian psychologist, who was once guru to W.H. Auden in Berlin in the 1920Õs Ð and his relationships with several well-known and influential people during the 1960Õs and 70Õs both in the arts and literary scene, as well as in the world of fashion. As his story, and all the many other stories contained within it unfold, we encounter a cast of poets, painters, healers, tinkers, shamans, Buddhist monks and Shinto priests, and many others. We are guided into a spiritual realm of altered states of consciousness and other realities, through his involvement in training with a Buddhist monk and then a Japanese shamanic healer, resulting in spirit possession, and culminating in a dramatic exorcism in the Peruvian rainforest, described at the end of the book. RitchieÕs memoir pulses with a variety of different energies, and works on several levels, often placing it beyond the specific genre of memoir, taking the reader into a life of danger, adventure and revelation, all recounted and leavened by a mind redolent with a pantomimic and comedic sense of humour, but shadowed at the same time by a cynical eye cast over Western civilization and culture.
