A wonderful address by Powell on the joys of books and libraries. Powell grew up with Ward Ritchie (fellow bookman and printer extraordinaire) in Southern California where the two of them were part of an intimate group in the late 1920s and early 1930s that included M.F.K. Aggiungi al carrelloLos Compadres" refers to an informal club of bibliophiles gathered around Jake Zeitlin and his Red Barn. The issuer of this broadside. who may also be the printer, was undoubtedly a club member. It was likely issued in a very small number, perhaps for members of the club, in addition to Ritchie and Zeitlin. OCLC lists no copies,… though the Clark Library, which houses Ritchie's papers has copies. Ritchie collectors and Zeitlin employees from the 1980s we have consulted are unfamiliar with it. 21 in. x 15 in. With an illustration (8Ó x 7Ó) of a danse macabre (with skeletons labeled Sales, Service, Costs, and Charts) on GutenbergÕs grave above the poem ÒA Printer Dances a Terrible Dance of DeathÓ by John Henry Nash. Also, with anecdote, ÒA Bad Case of the Jitters,Ó by Nash. Text and engraving in decorative borders. Text and images printed in black, on off-white card paper. A fine, bright copy of a rare later Ward Ritchie and Jake Zeitlin association item.
