Rittlinger (1909-1978) war ein schon vor dem Krieg bekannter Reiseschriftsteller, Photograph, Kanusportpionier (auf seinen Reisen war er immer mit Faltboot unterwegs) und bekennender Anhänger der Freikörperkultur. Er leitete im Zweiten Weltkrieg ab 1942, als harmloser Kaufmann getarnt, einen Stützpunkt der Abteilung "Fremde Heere West" der deutschen Abwehr unter Wilhelm Canaris. Er beschreibt hier unter den von ihm "herausgegebenen" angeblichen Memoiren des Veteranen und Chefspion Otto Wolke in geistreicher Weise seine eigenen Erlebnisse während dieser Zeit.
