Full pebbled brown cloth ruled in blind to sides and lettered in gilt to spine. Cloth chipped and nicked at spine ends and lightly rubbed through at corner tips; spine and board edges a bit faded. Gilt dulled but still legible. Partial split between the front two blank endpapers mended with archival Japanese kozo paper tape. Last page of text, previously pulled loose, now archivally reinserted. Prior owner's period ink stamp ownership at front; foxing and toning to front and rear endpages. Several pages of publisher's advertisements at rear, including ads for government claim agents and business services catering to Union veterans. Roach's account of Col. Streight's 1863 cavalry raid into the Confederate rear, his capture, and the subsequent treatment of Union prisoners in Southern prisons, including a substantial section on Andersonville, is one of the earlier printed POW narratives to appear after the war's end.
