Maire Lynd's letter was 'a delight surprise', Priestley being unaware that her son was 'in the film business'. He continues: 'There is probably a good boo…k to be written about your parents and their circle, with extracts from your mother's autobiography, but I must confess I do not know who would write it - unless you and Sheila [her sister] did it between you.' In Priestley's view some of Robert Lynd's 'best pieces are in SOLOMON IN ALL HIS GLORY'. He does not know 'if there is anything useful for you in my critical essay on him'.

In fair condition, a trifle worn and discoloured, with one inky thumbprint (not over text) and a kink to one corner. Addressed by Fisher to 'Miss Mayra [sic] Lynd / 5 Keats Grove / Hampstead / NW.' Signed by Fish…er with initials 'H F'. Reads: 'What charming verses! You might as easily have replied otherwise eg / Hola! un gant! / Bonnet rouges en avant! / A la Bourgeoisie / [?] choisie / Aux capitalistes / Farceurs, fumistes / [?] un gant de [?] / etc etc / H F'. The recipient writes the following lengthwise on the address side: 'H. A. L. Fisher, to whom I was a temporary daughter or niece at New College (while I was a Home-Student 1931-4) had urged me in verse not to cut off my long hair & I had replied "The hair remains - / "The virtue & the [bun?]" &c / & had gone on to ask him for a quote in praise of "The Bible to be read as Literature" which Heinemann were about to publish. No, that must have been after 1934. / M. Gaster 1987 / I must have left a glove behind at Thursby & written a verse.'.

Both items are in good condition, lightly aged. Both 1p, 12mo, and each folded once for postage. ONE: SL to CS, 18 January 1922. Signed 'Sylvia…Lynd'. Begins: 'My dear Clement, I hear that you have a little daughter. Many many congratulations & good wishes. It is very nice to know that you are so happy.' She turns to her own family: 'We are all well down here & very busy. Sheila & B. J. [the Lynds' two daughters] must have grown about a foot taller since you saw them. R[obert]. sometimes brings me kind messages from you which should have been replied to long ago.' She thanks him now, sending 'all my belated good wishes with these new ones'. Item One in its original envelope, with both envelope and letter carrying closed tears, the other four items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: ALS on letterhead of the hotel Les Bergues, Geneva; 7 April 1924, with envelope, with both le…tter and envelope torn on opening. TWO: ALS from the Ministry of Labour, London; 24 April 1924. THREE: TLS from Montagu House, Whitehall; 24 Aug. 1926. Sending, 'in confidence, this letter that I have had from Benn's. The reference is to the list of additional names for inclusion in the Sixpenny Poets.' FOUR: TLS addressed as third; 6 May 1927. He writes that he is including her poems in a series of modern verse. 'The series would have, among others, Gerald Gould, D. H. Lawrence, yourself, possibly Lascelles Abercrombie, possibly Gordon Bottomley, and possibly F. S. Flint. I don't think that is a bad lot. Do you?' FIVE: Typed copy of letter from Victor Gollancz, Ernest Benn Limited Publishers, London; 23 August 1926. He considers 'Sylvia Lynd and Wordsworth's Sonnets' both 'good ones' for including in the list.

An attractive item on four unpaginated folio pages, in a bifolium. Uncommon. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, but not folded. Drophead title: 'No. 8 (New Series) August 1935. / A Broadside / Editors: W. B. Yeats and F. R. Higgins; Musical Editor, Arthur Duff. Published monthly at the Cuala Press, One Hundred and Thir…ty Three Lower Baggot Street, Dublin.' At bottom left of first page: '300 copies only.' At foot of last page: 'The illustrations on this Broadside are by Victor Brown.' Beneath the drop-head title is the first illustration, of a bird flying above a nest on a branch, coloured in grey-green. Beneath the illustration begins the poem to which it refers: James Stephens' 'The Fifteen Acres', beginning 'I cling and swing / On a branch, or sing / Through the cool clear hush of morning O!' Between the second and third parts of the poem, on the second page, is the score of its music. The poem ends on the third page, and is followed by an illustration, in red, green, grey, orange and yellow, of the pharaoh's daughter finding a baby in the rushes. Underneath this is the poem 'Pharao's [sic] Daughter', 'Attributed to Michael Moran - "Zozimus."'), beginning 'In Agypt's land contaygious to the Nile,'. On the last page is a second musical score, headed 'Tune to "Pharao's Daughter"'. The item is from the Lynd archive, and there are pencil notes to the scores, apparently by Sylvia Lynd. Beside the first she writes 'Good', and beside the second she makes a note of two alternative keys.

Beneath the drop-head title is a large illustration of a man, newspaper under his arm, tramping home on a windy day along a country path to a cottage where a woman waits. It is coloured in green, pink, red, brown and grey. Beneath the illustration begins the poem to which it refers: Padraic Colum's 'A Ballad Maker', beginning 'Once I loved a maiden fair, / Over the hills and far away, / Lands she had and lovers to spare, / Over the hills and far away.' At the foot of the second page is Duff's score for the poem, which concludes at the head of the third page. It is followed by an illustration of an exotically-dressed lady washing her feet while sitting on steps in a Dublin street. It is coloured in green, blue, purple, red and orange. It is followed by an anonymous eight-line poem titled 'The Spanish Lady', beginning: 'As I was walking through Dublin City / At the hour of twelve in the night / Who should I see but a Spanish Lady / Washing her feet by candle light;'. At the head of the last page is a short musical score, headed 'Tune to "The Spanish Lady"'. The item is from the Lynd archive, and there are pencil notes of keys to both scores, apparently by Sylvia Lynd. Also in pencil, on the first page, is what looks like the word 'Oil', but by comparison with other items from the archive it is the price: '6d'.

From the Lynd archive, and judging from the handwriting a youthful effort, almost-certainly dating from before Sylvia Dryhurst's marriage to Robert Lynd in 1909. In fair condition, on aged paper. In seven stanzas, the first three giving a taste…of an amusing and unusual jeu d'esprit and excellent piece of Edwardian social history: '1) By some devil surely sent | Sandal hunting off I went, | And my footsteps never slowed | Till I reached the Finchley Road. | Chorus: (with fervour) Damn them ! | Damn them ! great & small ! | Damn each one & damn them all ! ! ! ! | 2) Lilley & Skinner, FitzJohn's Co. | Green & Edwards on we go - | Woodcock's, Barnes's hopefully | Then returning dolefully. | Chorus: (with more fervour) | 3) Asking "5" they gave me "4", | Or "sold out", they had no more, | But a "2" they could supply | New lot coming - by & bye ! | Chorus: (more fervent still !)'. After yet more fruitless hunting, in the sixth stanza the narrator exclaims: 'Sandals all may go for me | To the bottom of the sea | (That's politer than the D -)'. The poem ends with a recitation of the chorus 'with concentrated venom'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Unsigned, but in Lynd's hand and from the Lynd family papers. 6pp, 4to, on six leaves of ruled paper, twenty-six lines to a page. In fair condition, lightly aged, with dog-eared corners. Lynd's handwriting is execrable, and he employs a number of abbreviations of common words, such as 'and', 'the…', 'of'. Begins: '[.] found expression in literature. / As I have suggested, however, it is in the art of conversation rather than the art of literature that the Irish comic spirit has found its fullest expression. [.]' Lynd's discussion brings in Congreve, Shaw, Standish O'Grady, Douglas Hyde, O'Higgins. Ends: '[.] he began to look through the books in the library and happened to open O'Halloran's History of Ireland in three volumes. It was the first History of Ireland into wh[ich] he had ever looked. It is then t[hat] his imagination got the first impulse and pluned it back among the gods & heroes of Ireland. No man has done more to interpret those gods & heroes to the imagination of modern Irishmen & to remind them of the glorious [?] & the Irish drama. Who has ever written more nobly of the creations of those early writers?' The passage '& to remind them [.] Irish drama' is lacking in the text as published on pp.160-161 of 'The Irish Bookman', vol.13 (1922).

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 'Rambles in Ireland' was published in 1912, with illustrations by Jack B. Yeats. On one side each of four 4to leaves of aged and worn paper. The first leaf carries a covering page on which is the typed word 'KINSALE'; above this Lynd has written in pencil: '26 / Rambles in Ireland / (By Robert Ly…nd) / Chapter VII'. The three pages which follow carry the text: title and 21 lines on the first, and twenty-five lines apiece on the second and third. On the first page one sentence is entirely recast: '[.] but of rest and the look of the place, I cannot say whether Parson Tomms and Parson Mead and the mayor have left any worthy successors. Kinsale is one of those quiet southern towns, which look almost as though they had been forgotten at the bottom of a sea of still air.' becomes 'but of quietness & the site of a battle, I cannot say whether Parson Mead and the mayor have left any worthy successors. But I deny upon oath, however, that it is or ever was a vile place[.] Kinsale is one of those quaint and still southern towns, which look almost as though they had been forgotten at the bottom of a motionless sea of air.' The second page has thirteen minor emendations, and the third two. The reverse of the final leaf is filled with infant drawings of anthropomorphic farm animals.
