Tears to cloth on boards. Top edge painted dk olive. "A Rock in the Baltic" concerns the adventures of Lieutenant Alan Drummond, an officer in the Royal Navy. The Lieutenant has incurred the disfavor of his superiors. In temporary command of a cruiser in the Baltic, he used the rock of the title for target practice. Much to his surprise, the rock shot back, and the Russians subsequently demanded the British hand him over. They refused, but were not happy. Shortly after, Lieutenent Drummond meets Miss Amhurst in a bank, and an attempt to assist her in cashing a check leads to a suspiscion by the Cashier that he is a robber. The Lieutenant has a knack for getting into trouble with the best of intentions. Between angry Russians, unhappy superiors, and an attractive young woman, Lieutenant Drummonds problem's are just beginning. Source: Publisher. Hermann Heyer (illustratore).

This is a Novel of International Intrigue from 1906 about the British Navy and a mistaken belligerency - an Inspired Russian inventor, the Russian Secret Police, and a hidden prison fortress from which no one has escaped alive - and, of course, a Romance! Robert Barr's "A… Rock in the Baltic", published in 1906 in New York and London by The Author's and Newspapers Association, and illustrated with reproductions of water-color drawings by Hermann Heyer. ROBERT BARR (1849 - 1912), a Scotsman, was the author of a considerable number of novels, a great many of them thrillers and crime novels which, as a genre, was then taking off in popularity. Short story writer, novelist, journalist, editor - Barr knew many of the leading literary figures of his day. In London, with Jerome K. Jerome as his partner, he started the magazine, "The Idler" . He was friends with Bret Harte and Stephen Crane, as well as Arthur Conan Doyle, who was a close friend. In 1892 Barr published the first ever Sherlock Holmes parody, "Sherlaw Kombs". Basically a romantic thriller, "A Rock in the Baltic" has a little bit of everything for readers. For the ladies, there is the romance between a dashing English Naval officer and a young New York society debutante. For the gentlemen there is presented international incidents, possibly leading to war between Russia and England. For fans of the adventure story there are Russian insurrectionists, nefarious Russian police, a freedom-loving Finnish sailor, and an intrepid and adventuresome Russian prince, who is also a brilliant scientist/inventor, as well as a progressive thinker. Just what is Prince Lermontoff's amazing invention or discovery? To top it all off there is the "Rock in the Baltic" off the coast of Finland: the 'Trogzmondoff', a combination of prison and fortress. ILLUSTRATIONS : Hermann Heyer / one page has a facsimile of Barr's own penmanship printed on purple paper PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Trade hardcover; Contains 4 color plate illustrations after water colors (including frontispiece); has one facsimile of the author's manuscript page from the book printed on blue paper; 321 pages; plus 2 pages of author's titles; approximately 5" x 7 1/4" (12mo); publisher's binding:of light olive-green cloth with title lettered in white on spine and front board; front board has an illustration of a battleship done in white and black presented within an oval frame. On the title page is printed the following: "The sale of this book in New York and Philadelphia is confined to the stores of John Wanamaker" CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book, in very nice antiquarian condition, clean and presentable with the following noted: EXTERIOR : Spine displays compression, with fraying starting at extremities; color of spine is slightly faded and there is mild scattered weathering - mostly along joints and extremities but title still displays strongly and is unchipped ; boards display mild surface rub and moderate weathering; corner tips are softly bumped; edge wear is mild; there is scattered small near-negligible spotting on the boards, most noticeably on the rear - the white ink used for the title and illustration is in very good repair and not chipped as is normally seen with this title. Text-block edges are clean. BINDING : Solid enough . the book has obviously been read and the pages open readily, but no leaves are detached or loose. END PAPERS : There is a gift stamp, with giftee's name written in ink (Annie Justin) INTERIOR : Small signs of use throughout - a few scattered small spots and smudges - a few page edge tears - one tear impacts two letters of text (leaf with 129/130) the color illustrations display brightly. Covers quite soiled and coming loose from the textblock…, a great deal of hand writing on the blank pages at the beginning (see description below), numerous black and white photos tipped in at various places in the text with accompanying handwritten text, previous owner's signature on front free endpaper and bookplate on front pastedown [Edward Thomarson], stamp to front pastedown of J.N. Mathias Bookseller, La Mars, Iowa, else good to very good. No dust jacket. This is a most curious copy because of the handwritten material at the beginning and the photos tipped in. Edward Thomarson (1865-1936) was a businessman in Le Mars, Iowa. He emigrated from England with his wife Margaret Weddell. In the family tree on Ancestry, someone had written, "Edward Thomarson was believed to be the illegitimate son of the Duke of Buccleuch." Handwritten on ffep (in different handwriting from Thomarson): "after the Archer came one Willie and one Ray who read the account of the Countess Tekla's woes & triumphs with avidity. For thrice now they traveled o'er the same ground though some 700 years after. But ash or crossbow had they none, and only a curious empire (?) of offenses [unreadable] "Kodak" with which they did woefully pester the landscape. [Unreadable] most strange [unreadable] this curious empire (?) is that it securest not only the whole of the person upon whom it be directed but [unreadable] of the country surrounding him, as witness the spoils which have been placed between the pages of this book by these new Archers (?) the loving sister and brother of the books' owners." (I have not been able to identify these people with certainty.) "The Archer" who wrote the first inscription was unlikely to be the author. Robert Barr (1849-1912) was born in England, lived in Canada and the U.S., and ended his days in his native country. He was a journalist and author of short stories, novels, and non-fiction which had popular appeal. He is thought to have concluded Stephen Crane's unfinished novel THE O'RUDDY (1903). The photos tipped in at various points seem to illustrate places mentioned in the story, as the handwritten inscriptions near them suggest. A very interesting copy for any collector of Robert Barr.
