Aggiungi al carrelloRobert Birmelin (illustratore). FIRST PRINTING, PRESENTATION COPY. Inscribed by Hughes to his Cambridge friend Joe Lyde, "For Clapham Slim from Ted". One of 200 copies printed, now extremely scarce. Lyde was Hughes' contemporary at Pembroke College Cambridge. He played trumpet and piano to a high standard, and had the best jazz band in town (Bate: p.75). Lyde is immortalised in Birthday Letters in the poem 'St Botolph's' about the famous Cambridge party in 1956 to launch the student magazine St Botolph's Review where Hughes first met Sylvia Plath: "The sound-waves / Jammed and torn by Joe Lyde's Jazz. The hall / Like the tilting deck of the Titanic: / A silent film, with that blare over it". Lyde adopted the name 'Clapham Slim' in the mid-1960s when he lived in South London and performed in local pubs. A hard-drinking, plain-speaking Irishman, Plath couldn't stand him but he remained good friends with Hughes until his early death in 1976. After Hughes had given him this print, the ever practical Lyde folded back the edges to make it fit a much smaller frame. A scarce survival of Hughes' first published broadside, with a wonderful association. WorldCat locates just two copies in British institutions. Pike was included in Hughes' second collection for Faber, Lupercal. Printed by Leonard and Esther Baskin and Richard Warren. Broadside (530 x 405 mm), paper rough wove, right and bottom edges deckle, printed in red (Pike), black and green. Folds around the plate not affecting the image, further light creasing, some spotting and staining. A very good copy. [Sagar & Tabor A2. Jonathan Bate, Ted Hughes - The Unauthorised Life, Collins, 2015. Anne Stevenson, Bitter Fame - A Life of Sylvia Plath, Viking, 1989. Ted Hughes, Birthday Letters, Faber, 1998].
