Bound in a modern half leather, marbled boards, gilt title to spine. Minor rubbing and surface wear. Binding square and firm. Replacement end papers. The page edges are uncut, with some creasing, nicks, and small losses to the margins of the early leaves [title page, prelims, etc]. Occasional mild spotting within. Overall a 'Very Good' copy. Scarce original edition. The author was a Prussian geologist, and this work is a significant study on the geology of the region based on his travels between 1806 and 1808. The author reports on the human and physical aspects of the region as well as recording geological features. A contemporary of Humboldt and at times a colleague of him, Buch also was observing the changes of flora in relation to height as well as observing patterns in rocks and formations.
