He served as the provost of Tulane University and President of Oberlin College in the 1980s and 90s. During his time at Tulane, he collaborated with the school's dean of architecture, Ronald Filson, to purchase and restore threatened properties in the city. Besides He authored five books about the city, including this book and *Une Belle Maison: The Lombard Plantation House in New Orleans's Bywater*. The photographers, Robert and Jan Brantley, were a husband-and-wife photography team known for their architectural and interior design photography. Jan Brantley died December 19, 2008, at the age of 56. She was a nationally-acclaimed photographer. Despite her passing, the legacy of the Brantleys' work continues to be recognized and appreciated.
