Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a range of topics related to the living conditions and social challenges faced by tenement dwellers in New York City during the late 19th century. It explores the significant need for parks and playgrounds in densely populated tenement districts, highlighting the positive impact these spaces have on the physical and mental well-being of residents. The author also examines the prevalence of prostitution as a tenement house evil, emphasizing the devastating effects it has on families and communities, and proposes measures to address this issue. Additional discussions focus on the impact of policy, a form of gambling, on tenement dwellers, and the negative consequences it has on their financial stability and moral well-being. This book provides valuable insights into the living conditions and social challenges faced by tenement dwellers in New York City, offering a historical perspective on the importance of urban planning, social welfare, and community development. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the critical issue of tenement housing in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The author provides a detailed examination of the living conditions faced by working-class families in these overcrowded buildings, highlighting the lack of light, ventilation, and sanitation. The book delves into the history of tenement reform efforts in the city, tracing the evolution of legislation and the challenges encountered in improving these structures. The author meticulously details the design flaws of the ubiquitous "dumb-bell tenement" and its impact on the health and well-being of residents. He also analyzes the complex dynamics between landlords, tenants, and city officials, revealing the tensions that arose in attempting to implement necessary changes. The book's insightful analysis underscores the importance of considering both the needs of the tenants and the financial realities of landlords when seeking solutions to the challenges of urban housing. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Lawrence Veiller (18721959), working through the Charity Organization Society, mounted a Tenement House Exhibition in 1900 - over a thousand photographs, maps, charts and a vast cardboard model of a Lower East Side block, seen by ten thousand visitors - which secured the support of Governor Theodore Roosevelt and led to the creation of a state Tenement House Commission with Robert W. de Forest (18481931) as chairman and Veiller as secretary. Veiller did most of the work; the resulting investigation ran to nearly a thousand pages and produced the New York State Tenement House Act of 1901, which set standards for ventilation, sanitation, fire safety and occupancy limits in multi-family dwellings and became the model for comparable legislation across the country. The work sits directly alongside Riis's How the Other Half Lives as a primary source for Progressive Era social conditions, and is the more substantial of the two documentarily, though far less often seen in commerce as a set. Bookplate and ink name to front endpapers, minor toning to text-blocks;minor rubbing to extremities. Frontispieces, illustrations, plates, a portrait, maps including one folding, plans, folding tables and a folding chart. (illustratore). Book.…
